Golf Fashion Faux Pas: What to Avoid on the Course

Golf fashion has evolved significantly, but some style mistakes are still common. Here’s a guide on what to avoid on the golf course and stylish alternatives from our product range.

For Men

Faux Pas: Overly Casual Attire

Avoid: Jeans, t-shirts, and sneakers.

Alternative: Choose a well-fitted men's performance polo and golf pants. Potentially something like a father son matching golf shirt to tie together a seamless family bonding look for the day.

Faux Pas: Loud Patterns

Avoid: Overly bright and mismatched patterns.

Alternative: Opt for classic colors and subtle patterns. Think: light stripes and stripe variations, simple clip-art style graphics, checked, or if you're a no-pattern guy, solid colors

For Women

Faux Pas: Too Casual or Athletic

Avoid: Gym shorts, leggings, or overly casual tops.

Alternative: Choose golf-specific skorts and stylish tops. Classic polo shirts - whether they're cap sleeve, long sleeve, or sleeveless are always a great option. Alternatively, forego the two-piece outfit and opt for a simple women's golf or tennis dress - versatile, yet functional for movement on the course or court. Better yet, match with your little one while sporting a mommy and me outfit that can take you from a playdate, to the course, to dinner plans all in one day.

Faux Pas: Inappropriate Lengths

Avoid: Skirts and shorts that are too short.

Alternative: Skorts that offer comfort and appropriate coverage. While some clubs may have this part of their dress code, for comfort reasons, opting for a mid-thigh dress, skirt, or skort is the way to go anyways. With the full-body movement of most swings, variable wind conditions, and potential sun and rain, the added coverage can provide a comfortable way to play on all days, in all events.

For Junior and Teen Boys

Faux Pas: Ill-Fitting Clothes

Avoid: Baggy or tight clothing, especially 100% cotton blends.

Alternative: Choose well-fitted boys polos shirts and shorts with a little wiggle room. Opt for polyester blends, which tend to be sweat-wicking, as opposed to cotton blends that can trap moisture and increase discomfort.

Faux Pas: Non-Golf Shoes

Avoid: Sneakers or casual shoes.

Alternative: Wear proper golf shoes for both performance reasons, and style reasons. While there are many companies that have developed sneaker-style golf shoes that are in fact stylish (I love them!), opting for something you'll be comfortable, perform well in, and adhere to club dress codes in will be your best move.

For Junior and Teen Girls

Faux Pas: Too Casual or Too Dressy

Avoid: Dresses that are too formal or casual athletic wear.

Alternative: Choose girls golf dresses or skorts for girls designed for the sport. Built in shorts are a handy addition, although not necessary. Instead of jean shorts or running shorts, opt for a fitting skort with functional additions, like pockets and waist ties/built-in belts that allow for full coverage and freedom of movement. Instead of a classic skater skirt, pleated polyester skirts or skorts that hit mid-thigh can be a great alternative for warmer weather. For colder weather, classic, solid-print joggers made from a sweat-wicking blend (i.e. not cotton, avoid sweatpants styles and fabrics) are a fabulous layering option.

Faux Pas: Lack of Layering

Avoid: Not considering weather changes.

Alternative: Include layers like jackets or pullovers. For the bottom half - remember the joggers mentioned above? A loose fitting slack-type pant - both regular girls golf pants and tapered, jogger-style pants can be great layering tools as well.

For Infants and Toddlers

Faux Pas: Overly Complicated Outfits

Avoid: Outfits that are hard to put on or take off, uncomfortable fabrics, and materials that aren't sun-protective and/or moisture-wicking.

Alternative: Choose comfortable, easy-to-wear clothing. With variable conditions, sweat-wicking and anti-microbial fabrics are an easy choice. However, sun-protective clothing plays a huge role for your little ones! Remember, their skin is much thinner than our fully-grown skin, making sun protection even more important for their safety. Opt for a toddler girls playset or infant boys onesie in these materials, choosing simple patterns and colors. And again, make sure you've got an easy on, easy off style - there's nothing worse than scrambling to get an outfit off in times of need. Plus, the easy on and off styles tend to be more comfortable for our kiddos, so long days on the course will likely feel less enduring to them.

I recently received my order of golf shirts from https://hooliegolf.com/, and I have to tell that they are amazing! Moreover, I love how unique and stylish the patterns are! Their interesting and stylish designs mean I’m not forced to play in the same old boring golf shirts every time!
